The Senate Committee on Health says it is committed to providing the enabling budgetary framework that would help reposition Federal Hospitals in the country as centre of excellence in healthcare.

Chairman of the Committee, Senatpr Lanre Tejuosho made this known during the Committee’s visit to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital on oversight function.

He said the drive now was to identify hospitals with comparative advantage in facilities, manpower and treatment.

Senator Tejuosho said “Instead of the huge capital flight on medical tourism, Nigerians can then access their medical needs in any of the nation’s tertiary hospitals so identified.”

The Committee promised to assist the University Of Abuja Teachng Hospital with needed budgetary provision to fast track the completion of its capital projects some of which commenced as far back as 2013.

Earlier, the Acting Chief Medical Director, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Dr. A.S. Haruna had briefed the Committee on the hospital’s budgetary performance for the year 2016 after which he conducted members of the Committee on an inspection of on-going capital projects one of which is an additional house officers’ quarters which the Acting Chief Medical Director said would place the hospital in a position to take-in more house officers when completed.
